Jeudi presents: Sentimental Journey

from $25.00

Sentimental Journey
Songs & Stories of Harmony, Heritage & the Homefront
From the Barrio to the Battlefield

Date: Sunday, Sept 14th
Time: 2:00 PM

A message from Jeudi: Join me on SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 14 at 2:00 PM on a Sentimental Journey through my family’s immigrant experience. Part cabaret, part poetry reading, part sacred storytelling, and all heart. This is a deeply personal project filled with so much love and gratitude for my ancestors and their contributions and their sacrifices. I've never done anything quite like this before and I'm excited to share this first step: a "workshop production" with you, as I intend to continue to refine and develop this idea into something bigger.

I’ll be sharing my poetry and stories honoring my maternal ancestors who first came to this country. With a special focus on my grandmother’s 1906 immigration story, as a 14 year old orphan - - a “Choyera”- - whose sharp determination and stick-to-itness enabled her to reach for her dreams and travel alone as an unaccompanied minor to San Diego, and my grandfather, a 15 year old “traquero” from Jalisco, who hand drove spikes into railroad tracks all the way from Arizona to California helping to create his new country’s infrastructure - - Both grandparents in pursuit of the American Dream. Their stories are foundational, as are the World War 2 stories of their children - - members of “The Greatest Generation”- - my five Tíos who served in different branches of the military, and my mom and Tía who worked in airplane factories- - to keep the ideals of democracy and decency alive.

This is my tender tribute to their work ethic, their resilience, their love and the enduring hope that carried them through, and that now lives on through me and their descendants:  the grateful recipients of that seed of the American Dream that they planted a century ago. This show also celebrates the historic music - in English and Spanish, from boleros to swing - that brought comfort, lifted spirits, created harmony and kept hope alive through the hardest of times. With music direction by Charlie Harrison.

I hope you'll be there, serving as witness, celebrant and community in my first step towards a greater vision. It’s going to be an entertaining, inspiring and thought provoking show that honors history, all while lighting the way forward.

As always, I suggest you live your life like a celebration, so vintage & fine attire are encouraged.

Love & light to you and yours,

Jeudi Cornejo Brealey

Quotes

“There’s a smile in the lady’s voice and her contented perspective seems to be inuenced by the wearing of rose-colored glasses”. Rob Lester, Talkin’ Broadway

“Jeudi likes to dig deep for vocal gems of the ‘30s to ‘50s. She can inhabit several decades. Jeudi is not your typical singer of standards or the American Songbook, she is a vintage singer”. Joe Bebco, Syncopated Times

“Jeudi is heart-warming performer who will cast you in her spell. Her soothing lyrical voice has wit and charm. With her beaming smile, Jeudi brings joy to her audience”. Peisha McPhee, Vocal Coach, American Idol

“The vintage-voiced chanteuse shines bright”. John Sanders, Pasadena Weekly
